Terminology

Tannin Staining - Brownish or tan discoloration on the paint surface due to migration of tannins from the substrate (e.g., the surface that was painted) through the paint film.

Chalk Resistance - The formation of fine, white powder on the surface of the paint film due to weathering, which may give the appearance of color fading.

What is High Solids?

The percent of solids contained in a gallon of paint (defined as the “volume solids”) is the first characteristic to look for when determining paint quality. A higher volume solids paint is typically a better value (more dry paint and less liquid) and generally means that paint will perform better, last longer and cover better.

The greater the percent of solids in paint means that that paint will have a higher spread rate. A better spread rate enables that gallon of paint to cover more area thereby lowering the cost per square foot for a gallon of paint.
